Read, Compete, Achieve! What is this blog about?

I am a high school library media specialist in Marietta, Georgia at R.L. Osborne High School. I co-sponsor an extra curricular reading competition team. Our motto is Read, Compete, Achieve hence the title for this blog. Each year our student members read selected titles from a list of book nominees for the Georgia Peach Teen Book Award. There is a state wide competition in Georgia for the team that can score the highest number of points in a round robin style, face-to-face competition. The regional competition for 2006 will take place in Carrollton, Georgia. The competition originated in DeKalb County Schools and three years ago the competition went state wide.

My goal for this blog is to open up a discussion of the books and authors on the title list for the 2005-2006 school year and ask student participants and their sponsors to contribute their ideas about the books that they have read.

This is a great idea to add another dimension to our team for this year. It also would be interesting to hear from other students around the state as we prepare for the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.

Thanks for your comments Kate.
I am really excited about getting students throughout the state involved in reading and posting to the blog. I plan on sharing information about it through the GAMEDIA listserv as well as in the GLMA NewsLeader Back to School issue. I think this will help get the word out.

I realize this is primarily for students, but I'm wondering if we couldn't also post curricular links in our book reviews. Actually, students can do it, too. With "Read Across the Curriculum" being so important, I would like to point out to science teachers how many of Gary Paulsen's stories fit into physics.

Kit,
Please feel free to share curriculum connections and links in your book reviews. Students are welcome to do the same. If you have any really outstanding teen sites for reading let me know and I'll consider adding them to the permanent links.
